KARATE K-5 FULL (Waitlist Only)

Fee: $115

This class is designed to teach self-defense, improve self-confidence, teach non-violent problem solving, and be a physical workout that engages all of the major muscle groups. This form of martial arts is unique in the sense that it uses basic principles from biomechanics, sports medicine, and kinesiology. These sciences are applied to make sure that students are learning effective techniques that are not telegraphed, and regardless of how often or long and individual is practicing, it won’t cause joint damage (which is commonly associated with traditional styles of martial arts). LITERATURE PROJ- Reading Detectives K-2

Get your magnifying glass as we search engaging picture books! We will look for literary elements using story maps, completing author profiles, learning about synonyms, antonyms, homophones, similes, metaphors, personification. This class will provide students will a good foundation for how good readers read. Instructor: Cristal Moyer

CRAFTS- Paper Crafts K-2

In this class we will use paper to make super cool projects. Origami, cos-play, bracelets, beads, are just a few of the creative ways we will use paper to create interesting things. If we can make it with paper chances are in this class we will! Instructor: Melodee Bourdeau

AMERICAN CULTURES- Cantering the Country 3-5

Fee: $135

We will take a road trip all over the beautiful U-S of A! We will be visiting every state in this course! Through crafts and activities we will learn new and interesting facts that connect each state that we visit. Topics we will cover include: Review Of The USA, Geography terms, Special events or holidays each state celebrates, Map work, Presidents and famous people who hail from each state Students will receive weekly handouts that cover the theme that class period. There will be hands on activities and crafts for each continent/topic that we discuss. There will also be a map that tracks our “travels” throughout the world and we will watch video clips of the culture and topography of each area we “travel” to! There will be short weekly online assignments for students to complete that will support and expand on what we learn in class. Instructor: Seta Keon

IMPROV- Movement Games and Improv K-2

Moving is one of the best things we can do for our
bodies. In this class, we will almost always be moving! We will do hiding and guessing games, games with props, concentration and puzzle games, cooperation games, music and movement games, and more! Homework will mostly be moving at home. Instructor: Alex Moore

ELECTRICITY- Electrifying Electronics K-2 F

Fee: $145

How did Ben Franklin figure out a way to harness electricity, thus making it possible for generations of kids to play all those annoying video games for hours on end? How? By playing around with it! No, we won’t send your child out with kite and key to play in a lightning storm. We’ve got something almost as fun in mind: playing with electronic snap-on circuits to learn the basics of electricity, and then replicating some of the same experiments with plain old wires and alligator clips, the kind many of us parents grew up with. Under our well-grounded guidance, your students will build and learn about: series and parallel circuits, and how they’re used every day
digital logic circuits – for electronic devices that make ‘choices’
noise maker circuits – for fun- motion and light-activated alarm circuits

Class will focus on giving students an opportunity to experiment with various media including watercolor, oil and soft pastels, acrylic and ink. All projects are developed for this age group and gives each child the opportunity to add their own art flare, as they are leaning techniques used by professional artist. ASTRONOMY PROJ- Astronomy 3-5 FULL (Waitlist Only)

Let’s explore our Solar System! We will take an intense look at each of the planets in our solar system. We will also learn about our solar system’s star (the sun) and our planet’s moon. Students will do hands-on, writing, and reading activities in this class. Instructor: Cristal Moyer

HISTORICAL PROJ- Who Did That? 3-5

Have you ever thought about who came up the zipper that keeps your coat secure on a winter day, or how bubblewrap was invented? These are the kinds of questions that we will be asking in this class and spend our time exploring the little known heros that make every aspect of our days more simple. Instructor: Melodee Bourdeau

TOASTMASTERS 5+

Fee: $135

In this class, students will learn tips, insights, and strategies which will help them become a confident and effective speaker. We will explore 10 different speech styles over the course of the semester. Each speech style will help the student learn a new skill for public speaking. This class is also a great way for kids to come out of their shells and create new comfort zones while speaking in groups of any size! Instructor: Seta Keon

MUSIC- Modal Exploration 6+

Fee: $145

Learn, practice, and perform a variety of modes, scales, and musical patterns. Compose riffs in each mode to perform at the end of the term. Instructor: Bethanni Grecynski

PHYSICAL WORLD PROJ- Magic School Bus K-2 FULL (Waitlist Only)

Explore a variety of science topics by reading Magic School Bus books or watching the DVDs. We will conduct hands-on activity and experiments based on the science topic for the week. Instructor: Cristal Moyer

ENGINEERING TECH PRINCIPLES- LEGO Physics K-3 FULL (Waitlist Only)

Fee: $145

Lego’s and physics? What have the Brain Monkeys thought up this time? If you like Lego’s and want to know how to build creations that help you understand forces and motion, simple machines, measurement, energy, magnetism and more? Then this class is for you. We will be using Legos to explore, experiment and demonstrate some basic physics concepts. We will also use a specially designed Lego kit which allows students to work in pairs, each assembling part of a model. They then join their parts to complete the building project. Motors, gears and even using solar power or temperature sensors will be used in this class and we will not always be building from just the provided set of instructions! We will also get to explore a special new kit which includes lego’s that conduct electricity!! Join us and explore physics using Lego’s! LEGO = fun = learning! Instructor: Katie Tilton

Oil Pastels (Self-Pay Only) 3-5 FULL (Waitlist Only)

Oil pastels are fairly new to the art world and becoming popular. The bold colors and ease of blending are qualities professional artist desire. Student will learn different methods of bending; at the same time, developing drawing skills, and take a close look at art masters’ paintings to inspire their creativity.

HEALTHY LIVING- Physical Fitness 4+

Ann Arbor’s premier gymnastics club will provide specialized equipment, including tumbling mats, balance beams, mini bar, wedges and octagon, vaulting, and much more! Older students will participate in strengthening their body through fun physical fitness activities and cooperative games. Throughout the semester physical fitness will be monitored and periodically evaluated. Students will be taught basic fitness drills they can use at home and tumbling skills such as: forward rolls, backward rolls, cartwheels, and handstands. CRAFTS- Knitting Hats 4+

In this class we will take our knitting skills up a level and make hats! Lots of hats if you do your homework ☺. Yarn and needle purchase by parents will be necessary. LIFE SKILLS- Character & Friendship K-2 F

This class will focus on developing character and how to be a good friend.We will focus on kindness, sharing, empathy, and everything it takes to be a good friend. In this class, students will learn from real world experiences, act out scenarios, do hands-on activities, and read books. Instructor: Cristal Moyer

Ann Arbor’s premier gymnastics club will provide specialized equipment, including tumbling mats, balance beams, mini bar, wedges and octagon, vaulting, and much more! Students will gain focus, fitness, strength, flexibility, confidence, and self-esteem. Join us for the fun. TECH DESIGN- Junkyard Wars 3-5 FULL (Waitlist Only)

What happens when dominos are lined up and then one is knocked over? It causes a chain reaction and the other domino’s fall one by one! What if we were to create a MASSIVE chain reaction? We could use dominos, marbles, string, cups and lots of other household supplies! Did you know that this type of chain reaction can also be called a Rube Goldberg Machine? In this camp we will learn all about Rube Goldberg and how to build an epic chain reaction that everyone will be talking about! Instructor: Katie Tilton

SPANISH CULTURES- Advanced Spanish 5+

Students in my class will engage in conversations. They will work in pairs to practice the conversation. Students often begin to speak without looking at the conversation, or they begin to improvise naturally using puppets. Gestures are used as much as possible to reinforce the language. Playing charades is a great way to do this. I will be asking students to memorize the conversation. The partner conversation is the starting point, but the goal is to have student change and manipulate the language as much as they can. It gets them to practice more and internalize the language. They do perform for the whole class. Students will be exposed to music, art, games and literature as a cultural experience. Come and join us, it is fun and adventurous! Prerequisite: 1+ year of Spanish Instruction. Instructor: Miriam Del Valle

AMERICAN ERAS- American Trials 5+

Fee: $135

This class will be a mock trial extravaganza! We will pick three or four trials from American history and students will choose roles to play – either lawyers or witnesses for the prosecution or defense. Students will have some time in class to prepare for the trial, including learning about your role (if you are a witness) and preparing statements and questions for the witnesses (if you are a lawyer); however, there will also be work at home necessary. We will endeavor to have a separate jury for each trial who will listen and come up with a verdict at the end. This is a great
acting experience combined with American history and a little bit of law
thrown in on the side. Instructor: Alex Moore

BEG ROBOTICS- Lego STEAM

Fee: $145

Bringing physics alive in a fun interactive way through the use of Lego STEAM blocks and building models. This course is designed to meet the all the NAEYC guidelines for Science, Math and Technology. In this course, students will grow their understanding of gears, motion, measurement and solving problems together in a fun and engaging way. Children will work in pairs to complete weekly building challenges that will demonstrate how Science and Math play a large roll in their day to day lives. Beyond the STEM concepts and skills that students will learn, they will work on strengthening their skills in teamwork, communication, problem solving and community engagement. BEG ROBOTICS- Sumo Battle Bots 4+ FULL (Waitlist Only)

3-2-1 Sumo! That is the traditional starting announcement to a Sumo Battle Robotics Competition. Sumo Battle is when two robots battle each other in a Sumo Ring and the last robot in the ring is declared the winner. Lots of skill goes into building and programming a successful Sumo Battle Robot and in this class we will get students ready to battle their classmates in the Sumo Ring! Both building and programming will be learned and all experience levels are welcome. We will be using the Lego Mindstorms EV3 Robotics Education kits during this class which allow students the freedom to build and program their robot to do almost anything they can imagine!

SEWING SKILLS- Sewing 101 6+

Fee: $145

Learn to sew using a sewing machine. No prior knowledge is necessary. We will learn the parts of the sewing machine and how to thread it and wind a bobbin. Then move into inserting a needle and threading the machine. We will learn the two basic stitches, the straight stitch and the zig zag. We will learn how to cut out a pattern and sew it together. Focus on pj pants and a stuffed animal for projects. Fabric and simple supplies (tool box, scissors, pins, thread, etc) are supplied by the student. A sewing machine is recommended but not required. This class is in preparation for a more advanced skills class for Spring! Instructor: Melodee BourdeauP
